Preventing Mould in Auckland Homes During Winter
Auckland winters bring persistent rain, high humidity, and cooler temperatures — the perfect recipe for mould. Here is how to protect your home through the wetter months.
1. Control Indoor Humidity
Keep indoor relative humidity below 60%. Use a hygrometer to monitor levels. Dehumidifiers are a worthwhile investment for Auckland homes — run them in problem areas like bedrooms and living spaces during winter.
2. Ventilate, Even When It's Cold
Open windows for at least 15–20 minutes each day, even in winter. Cross-ventilation is most effective. Use extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchens — and run them for 10–15 minutes after showering or cooking.
3. Heat Your Home Consistently
Cold surfaces attract condensation. Keeping your home at a consistent minimum temperature (at least 16–18°C) reduces condensation on walls and windows. Heat pumps are ideal as they also dehumidify.
4. Address Condensation Immediately
Wipe condensation off windows and window sills each morning. Consider a window vacuum for quick daily use. Condensation left to sit feeds mould growth on frames and sills.
5. Check and Maintain Your Roof and Gutters
Blocked gutters and damaged roofing allow water to enter wall cavities and ceiling spaces. Clean gutters before winter and check for loose or cracked tiles, damaged flashing, and rust spots.
6. Keep Furniture Away from External Walls
Leave a 50–100mm gap between furniture and external walls to allow air circulation. Furniture pushed tight against cold external walls traps moisture and creates hidden mould colonies.
7. Dry Laundry Outside or Use a Vented Dryer
Drying laundry indoors releases litres of moisture into the air. If you must dry indoors, use a dehumidifier in the same room or a condenser dryer that collects water.
8. Inspect Under-Floor Spaces
Many Auckland homes have suspended timber floors. Check that under-floor ventilation is adequate and that ground moisture barriers are intact. Standing water under a house guarantees elevated humidity throughout.
Professional Help
If you already have a mould problem, prevention alone will not solve it. Professional remediation addresses the root cause — the moisture source — and safely removes existing mould colonies.
